Do’s and Don’ts Before Your Peel

Do choose a chemical peel that is right for your skin type. While chemical peels are considered safe, there are important considerations to make. People with a darker skin tone are at a greater risk of experiencing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark spots), light patches of skin, and/or scarring. As a result, we will help you choose the best chemical peel or a combination of peels for your skin type.

Don’t Exfoliate. A chemical peel uses acid to exfoliate the skin, which removes the outer layer (epidermis), to reveal the second layer (dermis) that sits underneath. So essentially it is a deep exfoliant. Because of this, we recommend that you do not exfoliate your skin for at least one week prior to your appointment. Keep in mind that there are many ways you can unintentionally exfoliate by using skincare products with an exfoliating effect. So, always check your products.

Do stay properly hydrated at least one day before your treatment. It is also important that your skin be fully hydrated, so don’t use products that may dry out your skin.

Don’t use Retinol products for 7-10 days before your peel. Additionally, if you are using products with a high percentage of alpha-hydroxy (AHA) or beta hydroxy (BHA), stop using them five days before your treatment.

Do wear sunscreen every day. Make sure it is broad-spectrum sunscreen, which is SPF 30 or higher.

Do not go to the gym at least 24 hours prior to your treatment.

Do’s and Don’ts After Your Peel

Do expect to see changes to your skin, not all positive. A few days after your peel, you may experience moderate shedding. The extent of shedding depends on the depth of the chemical peel. You may also experience:

  • Unusual dryness
  • Tightness
  • Flaking
  • Peeling
  • Small whiteheads (this is not a breakout)
  • Redness

Don’t touch your face. Avoid pulling at your skin even if it’s peeling. This is a process that needs to be done naturally, so allow the skin to flake off on its own. By picking at your skin, you can cause hyperpigmentation. If you are given a post-procedure kit or you were recommended to buy one, use it for five days or until the flaking has stopped. Use a protective moisturizer to reduce signs of flaking.

Do avoid direct sunlight and keep using your broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Don’t exercise or do any activities that will increase your body temperature or cause you to sweat. This includes taking hot showers, drinking alcohol, and even using your hairdryer, as this can lead to hyperpigmentation.

Do make sure your skin is properly hydrated. Continue to drink a lot of water and use your protective moisturizer daily.

Don’t use products with retinol and glycolic acids for at least 10 days after your peel.

Do contact a professional from our team if you are experiencing increased:

  • Redness
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Crusting of the skin
  • Flaking of the skin
